New Fairfield Senior Center offers daily lunch program provided by New Opportunities Inc., computer classes, sewing groups, card groups-including Poker and Bridge, Yoga, Tai Chi, and Weight Lifting classes, and Women’s Book groups. Friends of the Senior Center meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 4pm and The Commission on the Aging meet the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:30pm. Daily calendars are available at the Center.

Zumba Dance Exercise Class: Mondays andWednesdays at 9:30 am and now Tuesdays at 2:30pm. Certified Zumba Instructor Coleen Krempel is running weekly classes in this fun new exercise program. Known as a Latin Dance Party, Zumba® has become nothing short of a revolution. Six classes will now only cost $30 with the next series, register at the desk.
Life After Loss Support Group: Wednesday February 1st and 15th at 10:30am You Are Invited! to join a trained counselor from Healing Hearts and Hospice who will be leading a workshop for those who have lost a spouse. Grief work is hard work. We will provide you with some tools and support to continue to heal after loosing your partner.
Movers and Shapers Class: Tuesdays or Thursdays 9:30am, Coleen Krempel’s very popular aerobics class is held in six week sessions at theSeniorCenter. A fitness class in two parts that incorporates the 3 main elements of physical fitness, these are: cardiovascular, strength training, and stretching. The first part involves low impact aerobics to get moving and improve cardiovascular health. The second part ends with a seated session focused on strength training using lightweight dumbbells. Class is geared to individuals with all abilities, for those who have exercise experience as well as those who do not. Signup and fee of $20 per 6-week segment is required.
Tai Chi Classes: Tuesdays at 10:30 am We have openings in our Tai Chi classes led by instructor Dee Calvey. Cost is $30 for six sessions. Improved stress reduction, balance, agility for all is the focus of Tai Chi. Studies among older adults show exercise programs that challenge balance can reduce fall rates by as much as 17%. The most recommended exercise for fall prevention is Tai Chi because of its balance criteria.
Mah Jongg: Tuesdays, 1-3 pm Mah Jongg originated inChinain the 19th century, and has become one of the most popular games inChinaandJapan. It is usually played with tiles, though it can also be played with cards of equivalent design. Beginners as well as experienced players are welcome. If you have a 2011 Mah Jongg Card, bring it.
Yoga Classes: Tuesdays at 1:00 or Fridays 9 am Yoga classes weekly led by instructor Karen Gillotti. Cost is $30 for six sessions. The roots of Yoga can be traced back roughly 5,000 years. The benefits extend far beyond any ordinary workout routine and allow a view of one’s life in a more peaceful and proactive state.
Sittercise: Wednesdays at 12:45 pm & Thursdays at 10:30 am Sittercise is a 45 minute exercise program designed for use with all levels of ability including the physically challenged. Discover which muscle groups can be used while seated, and learn movement techniques that contribute to your increased fitness and health. A one-time fee of $5 and registration is required.
Spanish Classes with Carlos Ramirez: Wednesdays at 3pm, Learn Spanish as well as Spanish culture and heritage with weekly educational classes with Carlos, cost $20 for 6 week sessions.
Guitar, Fiddle, or Piano Lessons: Thursdays, 11-4 pm Gwen Glasser has been teaching music inFairfieldCountyfor nearly 25 years and has worked with beginner and intermediate students. Gwen offers lessons in fiddle, guitar, and piano right here at theSeniorCenter. If you’ve always wanted to learn an instrument, now’s your chance. Gwen is offering half hour lessons for $15 and she looks forward to passing on the joy of music to you. Contact Gwen for appointment at (203 )746-5725.
Better Balance Exercise Class : Wednesday at 3pm Dee Calvey has been trained in the evidence-based Tai Chi program developed by the Oregon Research Institute. According to their findings, Tai Chi can be a key factor in fall prevention. There is additional evidence that strengthening the lower extremities and improving postural balance through the practice of Tai Chi may reduce the frequency of falls even among early to moderately advanced Parkinson's disease patients. This 6 week class is aimed specifically at improving balance with the initial option of chair support and she promises just 2 weeks to better balance and range of motion. COST $ 30 for six weeks
10 Ways to Love Your Heart!! Wednesday February 1st 1:30pm The American Heart Association has new recommendations for 2012 for Heart Health. Cardiac Rehab Director for New Milford Hospital Nancy Demchuk, RN of Western Connecticut Health Network will be presenting.
Tax Aide: Mondays February 6th-April 9th The New Fairfield Senior Center will be hosting AARP’s Tax-Aide on Monday mornings. Tax-Aide is a free counseling program to help older adults complete their income tax returns. The program is staffed by volunteers who are trained by the AARP in cooperation with the IRS. An appointment is necessary for Tax-Aide and can be made by calling 312-5665. Remember to bring identification, your prior year federal andConnecticut income tax returns, 2011 Federal andConnecticut tax preparation booklets, and all 2011 income reports that have been received.
Hot Dog Bingo: Monday, February 6th at 1pm Hot Dog! $5 covers both 1st Bingo card and refreshments. Additional cards are available at .50 cents. Please, adults only. Come for the fun.
Men’s Breakfast Club: Tuesday, February 7th, 8:30 am Meeting the first Tuesday of each month, enjoy some hot catered breakfast foods. Rise and shine to attend this month’s guest speaker from Prime Time Fitness to talk on what you can do to live longer and healthier. Donations are kindly requested to offset the cost of breakfast. Registration is required; please no walk-ins on the day of the event.
1939 WORLD’S FAIR RETROSPECTIVE:FEBRUARY 8TH 1:30PM The most spectacular project of Robert Moses, the illustrious builder of roads and bridges, the World’s Fair was a breathtaking vision of the future—The1939 World’s Fair’s most popular exhibit was General Motors’ “Futurama”, where visitors sat on moving chairs and observed a future America below their feet. Upon exiting, visitors received a button with the words: “I Have Seen The Future”. Come see a fascinating documentary of the same name that will bring us thru time from the 1930’s to the current day. Discussion of this and other World Fairs will be held after the film. Please bring any memorabilia you may have of World Fair’s you may have attended.
Women’s Book Discussion Group: Thursday February 9TH and 16th at 11:00am Choice of reading will be The Postmistress by Sarah Blake.
Valentines Day Party: Monday, February 13th, 12:00 pm Come one and all, grab those closest to your heart and bring ‘em down to our Valentines Day Party ‘cause love is in the air. Enjoy a catered luncheon with Spiral Ham with all the trimmings and entertainment with romantic balladeer Sal Salgado as we celebrate the sweetest day of the year. Cost is $5 per person.
Walking Club: Tuesday, February14th and 28th at 10:30am Experts agree that physical activity is one of the cornerstones for good health, and walking is one of the easiest (and least expensive) ways to be physically active. All you need is a good pair of shoes, and you can do it almost anywhere and at any time. Join us for twice a month walk where all our miles are accumulated. $6 monthly dues requested.

Blood Pressure Screening and “Ask the Nurse”: Wednesday, February15th Masonicare Home Health will be here the 3rd Wednesday of each month starting Blood Pressure Screening at 1pm. This provider welcomes your health questions, too.
Michael Dutton Financial Talk Thursday, February 16th 2pm Financial advice that was good when you were preparing for retirement may not apply when you are retired. These monthly educational talks along with the question and answer sessions that follow will focus on topics pertaining specifically to Seniors. Mr. Fix It-electrical: Tuesday February 21st at 1-3pm A retired Electrician has volunteered to review your broken electrical items and do minor electrical repairs if repairable. Sign up for an available time slot. Small electrical items only accepted Appointments take place atSeniorCenter. Repairs are performed during scheduled appointment only. This month Michael will focus on “Gifting and Beneficiaries”.
Danbury Animal Welfare Visits: Thursday, February 23rd 1pm Danbury Animal Welfare Society, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to improving the lives of animals in our community and beyond. We are pleased to have them share information on their program and bring some very special ‘visitors’ to our center. Pets bring limitless joy into our lives. Their presentation will include:• Inspirational stories of how the adoption of shelter pets from Danbury Animal Welfare Society has changed people’s lives • Learn what role an animal shelter plays in the community and all of the services it provides.• Hear about how you can help homeless animals other than adoption• Meet wonderful dogs and cats that are presently up for adoption
Red Hat Luncheon: Tuesday February 28th 1pm The Sunshine Rambling Roses is the only New Fairfield officially registered chapter of the Red Hat Society. Red Hat Society is a unique ‘disorganization’ of women over the age of fifty who gather in order to share one another’s lives and to make our own fun. Embrace life and womanhood. We are holding out our red-gloved hands and inviting you to join us at our next monthly luncheon, prior signup required.
History of Shepaug Railroad with Bob Devine: Wednesday, February 29th, 1:30 pm The Shepaug, Litchfield and Northern Railroad was a short independent railroad that was chartered as the Shepaug Valley Railroad in 1868. It operated as the Litchfield Division of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad until being abandoned in 1948. Much of the line remains in place as rail trails to this day. Bob was the last to work on this line and will be here to tell of his story working this historic railroad as a young man.
Massages with Scott: Wednesday, February 29th 2pm-3pm Scott Coldwell of Phoenix Therapeutic Massage & Personal Training is running a once a month personal massage program. Scott, an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Certified Wellcoach. He uses a “whole body” approach – mind, body & spirit and can answer your questions on ‘healthy aging’ using a proper balance of movement and diet that works for YOU. Sessions are offered at a reduced cost of $7 for a ten minute session. Spaces are limited, reserve with the receptionist.
COMPUTER CLASSES
Introduction to Computers Tuesdays & Thursdays at 3:00 pm, 6 classes Starting Thursday FEBRUARY 9th This is the basic course that will help you get around the computer to use all other applications. You will learn many basics including how to create, save, and manage files, how to cut and paste and how to run multiple programs. It is a requirement for all our other courses. The fee is $25 for 6 sessions plus a manual.
