History of the Pledge of Allegiance Thursday March 15th 1:30pm Paul Upham, adjunct faculty member at SUNY and SacredHeartUniversity as well as descendant of James Bailey Upham, colleague of Francis Bellamy. At the start of every school day, and at most civic events, the Pledge is recited by all present, while the participants place their hand on their heart or salute the flag and join in but do you really know why it was written? The 1890s, was a pivotal point in our country’s social and economic history. There were many forces key in the creation of the Pledge and the push for Patriotism. The Pledge, first printed anonymously in the The Youth’s Companion, under editor James Bailey Upham. The magazine was the first to promote the Pledge as a flag salute and a national creed for the use of the American public that we still use today.
“Let’s Talk About Advance Directives” Monday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m. Linda Pinckney, nurse liaison at Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT, will present the workshop. She’ll talk about the types of advance directives recognized inConnecticut and give everyone who comes to the hands-on workshop the chance to create one on the spot. Judge Martin F. Landgrebe of the Housatonic Probate Court will be a guest speaker at the workshop. Also discussed will be myths and facts about advance directives, terminology, and answers to questions regarding treatment options.“ An advance directive is a gift that you give to your family so that they don’t need to make decisions for you,” says Pinckney. “Everyone, no matter what their age, should take a few minutes to fill out a simple form to make sure that their wishes are met.”
Craft Class-Altered Books Monday March 19thArtist and workshop leader Katie Stevenson will spark your imagination in this new experience! Transform an old or discarded book into a new one. You may bring a book or use one of ours. Old “board books” work best. Also bring any old photos, things you have saved or other small treasures, found odds and ends, feathers, favorite fabric and paper scraps, etc. All other basic materials will be supplied. Cost $8 per person.
